Cake Stand Centerpieces

I have a weakness for cake stands. I love finding vintage styles at yard sales and antique shops, as well as shiny new steals at places like Marshall's and TJMaxx. But no matter how many stands I acquire, I don't seem to get a chance to use them as much as I'd like. I don't get around to baking as much as I'd like, so instead of showcasing yummy treats on them, here are a few ideas to get those cake stands out of the cupboard and into your everyday decor. You could even use some of these inspirations for your wedding centerpieces!

Mossy Centerpieces

I don’t know about you, but I think moss can be so beautiful! I love how tactile it is, and how each pieces covers an object so naturally in a thin carpet. There are many varieties of moss, some found in your backyard, and some more exotic, but all will work for a lovely centerpiece.

You can find living moss at your local florist if it doesn’t grow near you, or you can try your hand at making your own with this tutorial. Martha Stewart also has a great how-to for creating your own moss centerpiece.

I also have a recipe for growing moss at home, I’m not sure where I pulled it from though!

1. Place a handful of moss into a blender along with a ½ teaspoon of sugar and a cup of buttermilk or yogurt.

2. Blend just enough to mix the ingredients into a paste.

3. Generously spread the mixture onto the surface where you want moss to grow.

Note: For best results, grow moss in shady areas. Do not wet the mixture once it is applied to the growing surface, it should be able to sustain life on it’s own.

Potted centerpieces

I really favor the idea of having potted centerpieces, instead of cut flowers. Understandably, it’s a more natural look and doesn’t always work for every venue, but it’s definitely something to consider when picking out flowers. You could also opt for half potted and half cut flowers, to shake it up a little bit. When it’s all said and done, and it’s time to clean up and head home, these would make perfect thank you gifts for your people who helped make the day come together perfectly.

Apothecary centerpieces

Aside from the usual uses for apothecary jars (ahem, candy buffets) these vintage inspired containers can serve as a beautiful centerpiece or room accessory as well!

I love the fact that the jar blends well with any theme, and almost transforms with the objects that are placed inside! Remove the lid for more of a vase look, versus a jar!

Some ideas:

+ Fruit filler

+ Soap or toiletries for the restrooms

+ A place to hold favors

+ A wishing jar for notes from your guests

+ Or jazz it up with ribbon or a beaded garland

Tea time centerpiece

Another wonderful centerpiece idea from Rachel Ray, this teapot arrangement is creative and soft, and would be perfect for an outdoor reception or "mad hatter" themed shower. You could easily score a vintage tea set at goodwill or any garage sale for cheap, and permanently affix the set together for added stability! Or, if you don't have access to a tea pot, float open roses in individual teacups around the table.

Favor centerpieces: mini bouquets

Love this idea from Martha: DIY directions to make beautiful "take-home" bouquets for your guests, that also fill the centerpiece. The dainty paper cones are an adorable way to hide the water-filled floral tubes, and are so customizable! This would also be a great favor for the ladies at your bridal shower... because what woman does not enjoy flowers!

Chrysanthemums, I’m in love with these crazy flowers! I really like the spider mum variety, they’re so tactile and fill out a vase very nicely!

For the love of fall!

Labor Day weekend always means the end of summer for me. Living in Michigan my whole life, I should know by now that it cools down quickly this time of year, even if it is only September. It’s that time of year where you take the boat out of the water and start bringing in the fire wood.

Even though it’s not quite fall, or even pumpkin season, I love these pumpkin inspired concepts for a romantic wedding centerpiece. From our dear Martha, of course.

I can’t say I’d have the patients to do many of these myself, but if you got a crew of friends and family, you could get a handful of them done for a cozy country wedding reception!

Wine-o weddings

I've always been a huge wine-o, so it's no wonder I'm a fan of this wine theme wedding items. You can do so much with a theme like this, and it truly has little to no limitations! Red wine, white wine, sparkling wine, you choose! Colors are endless, just as the shades of wine are.

Citrus centerpieces

I always keep an eye out for fun and interesting centerpieces, which always tend to pop up in odd places. This centerpiece was pulled from the Rachel Ray magazine I get, and it just strikes me as a perfect wedding detail. The gel is actually jello! The directions are at her site, here. It's too cool and useful for a non-wedding party too!

If you wanted to put an individual twist on this idea, you could always pour the jello in individual champagne glasses with edible flowers, and create an artsy dessert for guests!
